Looking back, George, as the days and years have gone by, you have always “been there” to help the people with whom you have been connecting. I remember when John John, had his & family mishap.
Another pilot (I think) almost immediately came on TV & explained (if I remember correctly) that JJ didn't have his "night flight certificate" (or some such), (although JJ did have numerous air flight hours).
This night flight training, teaches a pilot to fly, by watching dashboard controls. It's difficult, because natural instinct, tends to use one's eyes' vision through windshield.
I never understood how he couldn't find the heavily lighted coastline.
I have a private pilots license and an instrument rating. In private license training we did one night flight and 40 hours total flying time before being signed off to fly with FAA for license. I don't remember any such thing as a "night flight certificate".
Re finding heavily lighted coastline: When you're flying at night you aren't looking for a heavily lighted area. You are looking for an unlighted area. That's what an airport looks like at night.

I can't find the newspaper it was written in or any other article to document this. I find I am spending a lot of time trying to find the links of your screen shots. Would it be too hard for you to put links beneath your screen shots so your subscribers can easily locate the source?

Re: night flight.
I think there is a brain phenomenon that occurs if pilot cannot see visually (fog, etc.) a level horizon.
It may cause pilot to roll plane or descend sans realizing it.
That's probably why pilots are trained to focus on the instrument panel (altimeter, etc.) to fly "sightless."
I imagine if JJ was uncertain of his position, he might have descended to maybe visualize some land lights, for possible orientation.
But I'm not a pilot.
